A Big Change is Coming…

Hello Beautiful Readers,

October will mark the one year anniversary of Somewhere Between Vogue & Van Gogh. Over the past year I have watched my blog grow from a couple of views a week to almost 15,000 total views. Over the past year I have also grown as a person, I have made many decisions to leave things behind that no longer make me happy or impact my life in a positive way. I have been forced to step out of my comfort zone a number of times this year, and each time I learn something new and amazing about myself.

Since a lot has changed about me in the past year, I have decided to re-brand my blog to match my new outlook on life. When I created my blog a year ago, I was not my happiest and best self, I was a work in progress; and I still am. But, I now have a better idea on the message I would like my blog to portray. I have learned so much about myself in the past year, as well as so much about the gift of life. I am feeling more positive and I want that to be the focus of my blog.

Sooo….

I will be launching a BRAND new site in one week, and you are all invited to the relaunch. I will be posting all this week, hinting at the new and improved Somewhere Between Vogue & Van Gogh. From a new look to a brand new name, you won’t want to miss out! In order to stay connected with me you must check out my social media throughout the week, and I will share the new URL later this week. I hope you all will follow me on this brand new journey and help me make the the relaunch of my blog HUGE. You all have made this blog possible and I look forward to sharing this new site with you.

I cannot give too much away on what’s to come, so you must follow my social media handles to find out more details. Follow these links below:

Where is the Love?

Hello Readers,

Today, and basically everyday, I am saddened when I look at the news and see so much hate being spread around the world. In the past week I have had to reach out to a couple of my friends just to see if they are okay, due to terrorist attacks and riots. This may seem like nothing, but to me, I feel as though I should not be contacting my friends to see if they are dead. Yes, I said it. Dead.

This is the true fact, why do I live in a world like this? I understand we have issues, I’m not blind to these problems but the fact of the matter is that hate will not end hate. Fighting hate with more hate will not solve these issues. We get angry and upset that nothing is being done, we see no change and then we act on these angry feelings.

As most of you know, I was involved in the terrorist attack that took place in Nice, France this past summer. Since then, my perspectives on these issues have changed. The guy that drove the truck through the crowd had a motive rooted from hate. He killed 86 people and left over 200 injured, some very severely. 86 innocent people…for what? What came of this attack? More hate? More fear? but, no change.

These attacks only create fear, which is part of their motives, but people continue to live and we accept that this is the world we live in. We can’t stop these bad people from doing bad things, there are motives that we cannot control. One of these motives being hate.

You are not born with hate, hate is something that you learn or create yourself. Once someone finds this hate, it’s hard to break it. We need to spread love, and love may not beat the hate but it will at least make the other side truly look like the bad guy. Once the love is greater than the hate in the world, we will be able to defeat the bad. Fighting fire with fire does not work, the fire will only grow until the world is no longer civil.

Being involved with one of these tragic situations I have developed a certain empathy for others involved with similar events. It’s not something I would really like to have experienced, but now I know what it feels like to be running for your life, completely clueless of what is happening and not knowing your next move. I’m honestly thankful that I experienced this now because I have learned the fear others experience. This is a fear that millions of people live with daily, especially in countries like Syria or Iraq. We do not know how lucky we are in some parts of the world that we do not live with this type of fear on a daily basis.

We can sit back in our chairs and watch these horrible events unfold, or we can make the decision to spread love and not generalize and not be too quick to judge. I think in America we are very blinded to other cultural issues. We hate on Muslims because we think all Muslims are terrorists, which if you believe that you’re just dumb because that makes no sense. That’s like saying all cats like water; a majority of cats do not like water but you will find a few that may like water. All Muslims do not like war and hate, actually most of them do not. So, why do we say all of them are terrorists? That’s just not logical.

As far as racism goes, whether it’s alive or dead, we need to stop categorizing people into groups. That only creates inequality. Whether you are black or white, stop pointing fingers at each other. It will not solve the issues. Please understand I am not saying there are not racism issues but the problem will not be solved with hate. Rioting and destroying cities will not end racism, it will only fuel it.

I could probably go on about these topics all day, but I think I will stop here.

I’m just saying, when are we going to stop hating on people and start hating on the problems and making them change. The only way to make a change is by standing together, which by the looks of it will not occur in the near future. The world will not change if we continue to act on hate. From a person that has been close to one of these hateful events, it does not change the problem. People continue to live, life goes on and we just accept it.

I hope this little rant will open a few of my readers eyes. I am just so sad when I see yet another terrorist attack or a riot break out. Please spread love! The world is such a beautiful place, let’s not destroy it with hate and violence. Thank you all for reading today, please share and subscribe if you share similar views.

Spread love.

NYFW Recap: Street Style

Hello Pretty People,

Today I am doing another round up of the street styles that have been captured throughout the week. Since there is only two days left in Fashion Week, I will be focusing this post on street styles and tomorrow will be a complete run down of the week. I hope you all have been able to enjoy this series and engage with it. I love watching Fashion Week and I hope one day I will report it live for you rather than virtually. I mean who doesn’t want to be front row to the hottest shows?!

Let’s take a look at the most recent street styles that have surfaced over the past few days. It truly keeps getting better, I just love it!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

(These photos are from ELLE and I take no ownership of them)

I can go on for hours about why street style is the greatest thing in the fashion world, but instead I’ll leave this pictures here for you to decide. I just love seeing all the individuality with it, and it is insanely refreshing. I feel like New York City and Paris battle it out constantly for the best street styles. After visiting both city’s I can’t decide who does it better. Let me know your favorite street styles or who you think does it better?!

I know this post was a lot shorter than the rest, but I thought I would keep it short and simple for the mid-week blues. I hope you are all having an amazingly productive week. I have some big changes coming to my blog over the next month and if you are frequent reader please sign up/subscribe via email, that way I can add you to an official email list to bring you the latest changes. I am very eager to get the ball rolling on this exciting step but I will need my readers fully behind me.

You’re half way to the weekend…Smile!

A Closer Look at the Collections: NYFW

Hello Beautiful Readers,

Today I am going to continue with my New York Fashion Week posts, there is only a couple days left in The Shows and this series. Since I have not posted about the collections specifically in the past couple of days I thought today I would highlight my favorites that I have seen thus far. I hope you all have enjoyed this series and if you have suggestions or favorites, please share them with me.

Last night was the DKNY show and from the looks of it, it was amazing. Anne Wintour was there, and of course, Donna Karen herself made an appearance. The show took place on the beautiful High Line. DKNY has also recently appointed two new creative directors,  Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow. This duo took the chance and not only set the tone for these designs, but set their own name in the DKNY label. The collection was made up of futuristic styles, ranging from street wear to pin-striped professional. I thought it was a fantastic line with lots of variety.

Zac Posen took the runway yesterday, bringing some fresh designs to NYFW. Zac Posen is known for his amazing dresses, but yesterday he displayed a variety of designs. Posen stated that they took the signature idea of their gowns and brought them into a more day time kind of look, via moto jackets and pants. He worked with making the hemlines more definable and creating a new look that can also be signature to his already popular gowns.

Oscar de la Renta presented it’s new Spring 2017 collection yesterday as well. There was lots of buzz going on regarding the new creative directors of the brand are also the creators of the Monse brand. The duo is set to take over the creative design at Oscar in the beginning of next year. This collection was created by the studio crew, made up of 10 people. Some say the collection did not completely follow the Oscar name, but is that a bad thing? These collections are to be new and different, but some were disappointed to see the loose lines and baggy shorts. I, personally, thought the show was a great mix of Oscar classics and modern styles.

Rag & Bone is a brand I am not very familiar with, but after looking through the shows this one appealed to me because of the motocross inspired looks. I grew up racing motorcycles and I was eager to see the designs they came up with. Marcus Wainwright, working alone on this project, made the decision to showcase a more temperate weather collection rather than just a Spring collection. This is a global brand and he knows that weather differs from place to place; therefore, he chose to display more light jackets, sweaters and leather trousers. He explained that the tone of the collection was rooted from things he grew up with and learned to love.

I think all these collections were amazing in their own ways, they all brought something fresh to New York Fashion week and I am looking forward to their future designs. Check out more collections from NYFW on Vogue.

Looking for today’s schedule, find it here!

Thank you all so much for reading this post today! If you missed out on the last posts be sure to check them out. I also just started a new collaborative series with my favorite bloggers, called Cafe Chat, and I would love for you to check it out.

Happy Tuesday.

September Cafe Chat: Patterns & Prints

Hello Gorgeous Readers,

I am taking a break from my New York Fashion Week mini series to bring you a brand new collaboration with my favorite blogging tribe, the series is called Cafe Chat. This is a group that I will meet with monthly to discuss a number of different things, from what inspires us to what makes us happy, then we are sharing what we all discuss with each of you through all of our blogs. We had our very first meeting this past week; the girls and I met up bright and early at The Sparrows Cafe & Newsstand in Grand Rapids. Here is what we came up with:

Processed with VSCO with m3 preset

The first topic was about finding textures, prints and patterns that inspire us. It was really cool to see what each of the girls brought to share. Paige, from Where the Wildflowers Are, came up with our first topic. Paige is a bright and creative soul; therefore, this topic was a perfect way to include her style and challenge us to find patterns and inspiration through different things in our lives.

I could not come up with one set pattern or print that represented me or my taste, but the first thing I could think of was black and white fashion magazine photos. I decided to bring my Alexa Chung IT book and the #MadFor Madame Figaro magazine from France. The Alexa Chung book has so many cool patterns, illustrations and photos in it, and I thought my tastes connected well with the book. The magazine I brought had a cool spread in it with old styled photos and chic models.

Another piece I brought to share was my embroidered jacket from H&M because I am currently in love with embroidered pieces. I have always loved floral, but making it pop in your clothing is such a cool touch. This jacket has been the staple piece in my closet since I picked it from the shelves in France. I absolutely love the look to it. I also chose a few photos from Pinterest that showed more examples of this embroidered look, from Oscar De La Renta dresses to even the simplest denim tops.

Then after sharing my pieces, I talked a little about why I picked them. I am a very simplistic person when it comes to my style, I love classics. That is why I feel I am drawn to black and white photos in magazines. They are just nostalgic. I like when something can be timeless and authentic, and that’s what I strive to be in life, timeless and authentic. I love fashion that can cross over many generations and still be relevant. I love a person who can be so passionate about something that it literally shines through them when they talk about it.

I also think I picked fashion styled pieces because fashion is really important to me. I love that the industry is always changing and there is so much freedom within fashion. People may not think fashion impacts them but everyone has a “style” whether they choose to or not. Every culture can be defined by clothing. I think clothing and fashion are important because what you wear is your daily uniform to take on life. Dressing up makes me feel put together (even when I’m not) and more confident.

Lastly, I talked about my love for the ocean and how swimming in it makes me feel the most alive. The ocean is such an amazing undiscovered world and that completely intrigues me. When I swim in an ocean, sea or large lake I can feel the energy in the water rush through me. This may sound weird but it makes me feel so connected to myself and the earth. Water is such a powerful element and we often under estimate it, I think. I can relate to water as a female because I think women are often underestimated in society, but women are powerful and sometimes undiscovered. We hide ourselves in society because we are afraid to stand out.

Meet the Girls:

Tessa has a very minimalist style and she talked about this in part of her chat, she likes to keep her style very undone and simple. But, if you are interested in learning more about Tess and her inspirations, check out her blog at Simply Tess.

Paige is the owner of Where the Wildflowers Are; we described Paige as a fighter, authentic, raw and strong. Paige is the blog to go to if you seek all kinds of adventure, she is really in touch with nature and she has such a creative mind. In general, Paige loves textures and prints like wood grain and floral, these inspirations are root from nature and here artistic abilities. Paige is also interested in crystals and stones, they inspire her in many different ways. Some of Paige’s dreams include owning a small business, working in art therapy and traveling the country in a old Volkswagon Van. Check out more from Paige and her chat on her blog now.

Now here is my challenge to my readers: Find a couple of things that inspire you, take a photo of them and share it on Twitter or Instagram. See what you and your best friends have in common and start your own inspirational chat.

I am so thrilled to kick off this new and exciting series with my favorite people, these women are so amazing and wise beyond their years. I am so lucky to have found a group of like-minded girls, who I am able to connect with on a deeper level. I really encourage all of my readers to check out their blogs. This is a collaborative post, which means we are all sharing a little something different from our chat. Please check out all four to get the full effect of our chat. I hope you all enjoy this new series, I have found so much inspiration from it already and I hope you can too.

Happy Monday.

New York Fashion Week: Street Style

Hello Pretty People,

Today marks the fourth day of NYFW and so far, I am truly impressed. Instead of following the usual fashion of the past few posts, I have decided to focus today’s post on just the street style. Once again, street style is my favorite thing in the world, it is so unique. I love the freedom that each individual has with it. This New York Fashion Week has had some of the best street styles, in my opinion. Let’s take a closer look…

Okay, is the street style just getting better or is it just me?

nyfw_ss17_day_2_009

I absolutely love these classic light wash jeans paired with a long flowing top, that almost resembles a dress. I think this pairing is genius and totally chic. I also love the pop of red with the purse. Finishing the outfit with simple black heels. PERFECTION.

Bringing back the 90’s with a throwback tee and some high-waisted pants, which I love. I am a late 90’s baby, but I still appreciate the fashion from that time. I also see that bandana neck ties are making an appearance this season. I love the mix of colors in both of these outfits, from the red shoes and red baseball cap to the denim jacket and colorful tee. I am obsessed!

nyfw_ss17_day_2_024

Okay…do I even have to explain the perfection with this one?!?

I thought these 3 outfits were the most unique, the incorporated bright colors and edgy style. The long dress on the right is completely and utterly chic, it is the perfect street style for a classy woman. The two on the left are for the edgy party girl, I absolutely love the satin mini dress over a turtle neck long sleeve, it’s flawless. I love that she paired it with ankle boots too! The other girl is rocking a long red hooded, open front jacket with a black dress underneath. I think this outfit screams edge, she is a total badass.

Ugh, street style is the absolute best; it is my favorite part about Fashion Week. I love seeing what surfaces and how the average person takes inspiration from what they see on the runways to the streets. Street style is a true representation of a persons style and individuality.

Do you want to see more street styles? Check out the full album on ELLE.

Check out today’s schedule of shows here!

Thank you all for reading today, I know this post was shorter than the others, but I thought it would be fun to change it up a little. I really hope you liked it and don’t forget to subscribe below. Check back tomorrow for the very first Cafe Chat post, we will be taking a break from Fashion Week festivities to bring you the all new Cafe Chat Collaboration. You won’t want to miss it!

Cheers.

New York Fashion Week: Day Two

Hello Readers,

Okay, so let’s just start off right away discussing the Tommy Hilfiger & GiGi Hadid collaborative collection, TommyXGiGi!?!

Starting with the carnival themed ambiance, which included strung lights and fair rides, the show was already set for greatness. The show took place on a pier near Manhattan. Adding in one of the hottest models of our time, GiGi Hadid, this collection was bound to be gold. Tommy Hilfiger is know for his classic American style, but adding this super model to the mix, can you say PERFECT?!_aac0900

I really feel like this line combined GiGi’s killer street style with Tommy’s classic It Girl look. I love classics and this collection screams classic, therefore, it is now one of my favorites so far. The best part about this line, unlike other lines in Fashion Week, you can buy these garments right now at Tommy Hilfiger. This collection is also for Fall 2016, so be sure you check out the collection now on Tommy.

Now that I have fan-girled about this spectacular line, I can dive into the rest of the post.

The Collections:

Another one of my favorite designers, Kate Spade, showcased her Spring line on the rooftop of The NoMad hotel yesterday. Vogue said “The show itself, however, complete with traditional Andalusian music and a backdrop of Moorish arches, was anything but metropolitan, and instead every bit Morocco-inspired.” This show incorporated theatrical pieces to tie the theme into the new line being showcased. This was very new take for the uptown label, often times we see the brand of Kate Spade New York as a preppy city brand. Seeing the Moroccan inspirations tied in was very neat. The designs this time around had a more bohemian feel than usual, from an embellished shiftdress to flowing long skirts, these pieces are sure to be a staple in the Spring wardrobe of a New Yorker.

Some other shows that caught my eye included Zimmerman’s Spring 2017 line, this was a childhood inspired line from Nicky Zimmerman’s young days in Australia. She was suburban girl, spending her days in the city. “What that morphed into on the runway was clothing that had a ruffled pomp with a polished, DIY kind of indifference, rife with lace, tulle, layers, prints, and detail.” stated Vogue, in it’s rundown of the show. Nicky later described the feel of the show as “kind of sexy pirate”.

Another show I was eager to see was the Monse collection, it has been gaining a lot of media attention because the young start-up company was created by two creative directors from Oscar De La Renta’s staff. After the collection had been displayed, the buzz was over and the company is off to success. The duo talked about how they wanted to incorporate embroidery but while still keeping the designs simple and straight forward. As described by Vogue “The daywear was straightforward, too; their signature poplin shirts were pushed off one shoulder, and silk pajama-inspired pieces with mixed-up stripes made a cool, unfussy statement.” These two designers have a lot on their hands for next season, creating collections for two brands, but we are eager to see what they come up with.

You can check out more of the collections by picking a designer below or visiting Vogue.com.

Street Style:

Let’s cut to the chase and get to my favorite part…STREET STYLE.

(Photographer Tyler Joe via ELLE.com)

My Thoughts:

Kate Spade is one of my favorite designers right now, I am a fan of her preppy NYC style and her purses are the best. Their simplicity makes them easy to match with any outfit, or you can choose to buy a quirky cartoon purse and spice up your outfit with it. Clearly, the TommyXGiGi line is now a favorite of mine. I was so impressed with what the two came up with, I think it was the perfect mix of street style and classic It Girl.

The street style from yesterday was definitely better than the day before, I was totally in awe. I love the freedom in street style and you can see this in Day Two’s street style wrap up.

Overall, I think the collections that were displayed today were amazing and I am just looking forward to seeing so much more from all of these fresh, new designers, as well as seeing what the veterans of the industry have to offer.

Also, stay tuned for a break in this mini series on Monday morning when I post the first ever Cafe Chat. This is a collaboration with some of my blogger friends, who I know you will adore too. Please look for that Monday morning, but for now, keep your eyes on the runway for some more inspiration.

Recap Day One: NYFW

Hello Pretty People,

Yesterday was the first official day of New York Fashion Week Spring 2017 Ready-to-Wear, designers such as Desigual and Nicholas K were some of the highlighted shows. Personally, I do not pay much attention to these designers but I am excited to dive into some of their designs. So, if you are feeling like you do not know certain designers, there is no shame and I am right there with you. Honestly, I myself am working on breaking into the fashion world and gaining more knowledge on designers, bloggers and publishers.

The Collections:

One designer that stood out to me today was Adam Selman, these designs spoke to me and I was able to connect some of them to my everyday style. The show was titled “Sunset to Sunrise”, it included shimmering pieces, white sneakers and colors that represented the journey from sunrise to sunset. Selman is known for creating the beautiful beaded gown that Rihanna wore at CFDA a couple years back. He uses lots of beads, crystals and shimmering pieces, many of the beads and crystals are even unseen.

Kanye West is not my particularly a favorite designer of mine, therefore I will simply connect a link for you to explore more on his Yeezy collection.

Rosetta Getty was another show that I had an eye on throughout the day. This collection displayed Rosetta’s interest in art, there were many different edges and lines incorporated into her collection. Utilizing a felt material and mimicking the style of pencil skirts, these designs displayed a new light on the runway. Really bringing her collection back to the artistic side of the runway. I feel like this collection mixes the freedom of street style with the classic office look, it is amazing.

Check out more collections on Vogue’s website here!

Street Style:

As most of my readers know, one of my favorite parts of fashion is street style. I am going to be gathering some of my favorite looks from each day and share them with all of you. I would love to get your input too, so feel free to share your favorites too. Tweet me @Vogue_VanGogh and tell me your favorite.

You can also check out some of the behind-the-scene styles on Vogue by clicking here.

My Thoughts:

Many of today’s designers were brand new to me and I am for sure going to be watching for more collections from them in the future. I am now a fan of Adam Selman; his unique style of beading and glassy looks is interesting to me. I think it can be a refreshing style to an often matte industry. Sparkles can sometimes be over the top and tacky, but the way he incorporates it is perfect.

Thakoon was also new to me, I think the colors used in this collection were timeless and a favorite to many. From blush pinks to grey and white tones, I was in love with the colors. The Brooklyn Bridge made for the perfect backdrop in the show, the rustic bridge followed the tone of Thakoon and kept it classic.

I love these Ready-to-Wear collections because they allow the average person to draw inspiration from the runway. These types of brands are not always accessible to the average person, especially outside of the big city; therefore, these runway shows are not only a display of designer collections but also a vision/inspiration for us small guys in fashion. In all honesty, I cannot afford expensive brands that are often displayed in these shows, but from examining the street styles and watching the runway, I am able to extract what I can and add pieces to my personal wardrobe.

I think that’s the beautiful thing about fashion, it is not always about WHO you wear but more about HOW you wear it. Everyone can wear that fancy, expensive button up from BrandX but the real question is: can you wear it well?  Fashion is about how you style it and how you make it your own, at least in my eyes.

More shows are continuing throughout the day, check the schedule for today here! You can also watch your favorite shows live right here.

Interested in tomorrow’s schedule, click here.

If you are looking for more from yesterday’s activities check out Vogue & ELLE for more coverage and specific collections.

Thank you all so much for reading today, keep watching the runway and check back tomorrow for another recap from yours truly. I look forward to more shows. Don’t forget to share your favorite collection or street styles with me on Twitter @Vogue_VanGogh. I would love to hear your feedback.

Happy Friday.
